Length, beam, durability. The most stable are not always the fastest. And the fastest are not the most stable. Find a good combination of the two that fit your style of kayaking.

Speed, get one that is narrow, mine is about 22 inches at cockpit.



Balance, get one that is wide, like 24 inches at cockpit.



Durability, get a plastic one rather than fiberglass.



sealed bulkheads, self trimming seats are nice, low top deck (reduced windage, or being blown around by the wind), a rudder is good for beginners, lots of deck lines for maps, gear, fishing pole, etc.

Make sure there are no holes in the bottom of the boat. If there are you may have a problem..

check out hobie mirage drive system I just got the outback one for fishing and love it. also check out kayakfishing.com they have a lot of usefull info.
